Review: Star Trek

Okay, once again I get to do a mini-review of one of the films I have seen, so rusty or not, here goes.  When In first saw the trailer, I was a little concerned (although still very excited), i have watched star trek for many years, and wasn't sure I liked the idea of youg Kirk, or the outright aggression of Spock (should only really happen when he was in the middle of Pon Farr).  But this said, the first was beaten aside by the sounds of 'The Beasty Boys', and the second, well, it was such an integral part of the story, and Spocks youth, that it was readily accepted.

The general concept of the film was of a time travelling Romulan, destroying Kirks father and his ship, changing the universes history as we know it (a nice tool for allowing any deaths of core characters).  It then follows the crew through to their time on the enterprise, and how they become friends and trusted companions to one another.

Now, overall, the film was awesome.  It didn't pee all over the concept of star trek, or try to make it something that it wasn't, at the same time though, it wasn't at all like the original series' films in pace, this was fast, with lots of explosions and everything else you need in a modern day multiplex for summer season.  The characters interactions were interesting, without any unnecessary winks to past series.

My only gripes towards this film were small, and petty.  The first is Scotties small friend, who reminded me of a shaved Ewok, which definately concerned me.  The other was as the film began, there was a subtle fanfare, or aura around the film, which made me think star wars not star trek.

I would advise going for a good bit of action fun.
