Orfanato, El (2007)
Well, last night I finally got to see 'El Orfanato'. Which is introduced by Guillermo del Toro (which basically means he likes it, so its more of a recommendation than anything else). It is definately in the same vain as some of Guillermos work aswell, in such that throughtout the film you have to remind yourself this is a different director. What stops it being a del toro film, 2 things. The ending, and the lack of strange, imaginative monsters. Neither of which are bad things to change mind you, just different, and they do effect the film, but not in a grandeos way.
Now onto the actual film, rather than a comparison. It was awesome, made me jump several times, and I was creeped out during it aswell. Although, in comparison to a lot of modern day horror films, the horrors of del toro (and now Bayona) do not leaving you walking from the cinema scared. You watch the film, it creeps you out and makes you jump, but it closes nicely, and the ending is suited to the style.
It's not just jumps though, don't let my comments confuse you, there are some very creepy moments that go nowhere, which is the way of a good chilling novel or film. To the point, I was looking forward to this film, but also concerned that my excitement would not be justified. I was very happy with what I saw, and there were various elements that were left, not completely resolved in my opinion.
For those in the know, there is going to be an american remake, produced by del toro, but not directed by Bayona. This may be good, but in my opinion, it is unnecessary to americanise this film. The cinema was full where I watched it, so I am unsure what they are hoping to achieve.
